The mathematics challenge is a mixture of cerebral exercise and some physical activity but most of all the aim is for the young mathematicians to enjoy the challenges. Each school is invited to bring two pairs and the whole occasion is free for competing schools.
MENTAL WARM UP – DICEY DICEY AND ODD ONE OUT
The young mathematicians are asked to find the total of numbers which flash up on the screen. They will also be given some mathematic facts and they have to decide which is the odd one out.
There are five examples in this activity where the young mathematicians have to use the four given values and using the four operations they have to make the answer 24.
ROUND ROBIN ACTIVITIES
These are 8 minute rounds where questions on a certain topic have to be answered. Topics could be:
Puzzles with tangrams or dominoes or pentominoes
Ordering cards by following given clues
Mazes including addition mazes where the total has to be reached at the destination
AND THE ANSWER IS ...
Lateral thinking questions will be given with a choice of four answers. The young mathematicians have to solve the problems and display their winning letters to find out whether they are right or wrong.
The young mathematicians always leave these challenges buzzing where a sugar rush is not required!
